This is a significant mineral specimen featuring a prominent cluster of dark, lustrous sphalerite crystals seated atop a large, golden-hued 'dogtooth' calcite crystal point. The sphalerite displays a sub-metallic to adamantine luster with a complex, multi-faceted crystalline structure, appearing deep black with localized metallic glints. The primary calcite crystal is semi-translucent, showing a gradient from honey-amber at the termination to a milky-white base. The piece measures approximately 6 to 8 inches in length. Notable features include secondary growths of smaller clear-to-tan calcite rhombohedrons and a rocky matrix base. The condition appears to be naturally weathered with some visible abrasions and minor chipping along the sharp edges of the calcite termination, which is typical for extracted geological samples. The quality is high due to the dramatic color contrast and the preservation of the delicate crystal habits. This type of mineralization is characteristic of the Elmwood Mine in Tennessee or similar Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) deposits, likely dating to recent decades of modern mining.
