Mid-Century Kru / Dan Style Mask from Ivory Coast

This is a hand-carved wooden mask originating from the Ivory Coast, measuring approximately 9 inches by 6 inches. It is executed in a geometric style consistent with the Kru or Grebo ethnic groups. The mask features a shield-like oval face with a highly abstracted decorative schema. It utilizes a striking four-quadrant color palette: the upper right and lower left are a light cream/beige pigment, while the upper left and lower right consist of a textured reddish-brown encrustation. A dark central vertical band runs from the forehead through the bridge of the nose to the chin, punctuated by a prominent triangular nose and a rectangular open mouth with carved vertical 'teeth'. The surface exhibits significant age-related wear, including minor scuffing on the pigmented areas, thinning of the reddish surface texture, and visible chipping around the edges. The dark sections show a soft, aged patina. Construction appears to be from a single block of wood with narrow horizontal slits for eyes. There are small peripheral holes, likely for attachment to a costume. The craftsmanship displays strong symmetry and bold angularity typical of mid-20th-century West African ceremonial or decorative masks.
