Late 19th or Early 20th Century Wood and Cast Iron Folding School Desk/Bench

This antique schoolhouse furnishing features a dual-purpose design with a solid wood seat and a two-panel hinged wooden backrest. The structural frame is constructed from decorative cast iron with a dark, possibly black or dark copper oxide patina. The wooden components appear to be oak or maple with a warm amber-to-medium brown finish that highlights the natural grain. Significantly, the backrest is designed to fold down or pivot via a metal hinge mechanism which historically allowed it to serve as a desk for the student seated behind it in a row-style classroom setting. The cast iron legs feature elegant scrollwork and curved 'S' shapes, ending in small circular floor pads. In terms of condition, the wood shows a well-earned patina with scattered scuffs, superficial scratches, and minor finish loss consistent with age and heavy daily use in a school environment. There is a visible crack or structural separation in the upper panel of the backrest. The cast iron shows some oxidation and wear to the original finish but remains structurally sound. No clear maker's marks are visible in the photograph, though these were commonly produced by companies such as the American Seating Co. around 1890-1920. The craftsmanship represents the transition from Victorian ornate industrial design to early 20th-century functionalism.
