This is a vintage hand-carved soapstone sculpture depicting a heron or crane in a preening pose, mounted on an integral rocky base. The piece is crafted from a natural translucent soapstone typical of Chinese carvings from the early to mid-20th century. The body features a warm honey-brown to ochre tone, while the wing section showcases intricate incised feather details highlighted with polychrome accents in soft pastel shades of sky blue, dusty rose, and jade green. The bird's long neck is elegantly curved, with its beak tucked toward its breast. The sculpture measures approximately 10 to 12 inches in height. Notable features include a small red inlaid eye and decorative scalloped carving on the wing to suggest plumage. Condition-wise, the piece exhibits several visible age-related issues: there are significant vertical drying cracks or fissures along the top of the curved neck and head, and the surface shows a heavy patina with accumulated grime and some minor abrasions to the soft stone. The integral base has a rough-hewn, rustic texture designed to represent a rock. There are no visible maker's marks, which is common for this type of export folk art.
