Amethyst Quartz Geode Cathedral

This specimen is a large natural Amethyst (purple variety of quartz) geode cathedral, characterized by a tall, hollow vertical formation. The exterior consists of a thick, basaltic host rock matrix with a brownish-grey, textured appearance, indicating it was likely formed within a volcanic gas bubble. The interior cavity is densely lined with translucent purple quartz crystals exhibiting a medium-to-deep violet saturation. The crystals demonstrate classic pyramidal hexagonal terminations with visible light-reflecting facets. Geologically, this specimen appears to originate from the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil or Artigas, Uruguay, given its structural style. The specimen features a flat-sawn base, allowing it to stand upright, and it occupies a significant portion of the lower shelf on the wooden stand shown. Notable features include a secondary interior ridge or 'folding' of the crystal growth, adding complexity to the cavity. Regarding condition, the crystals appear predominantly intact with no major fractures visible to the interior terminations, though common with these specimens, minor edge chipping along the sawn matrix perimeter is expected.
