This exquisite object is an insignia, almost certainly a Knight's Cross from the Royal Bavarian Military Order of Max Joseph. It is expertly crafted from gilded metal, featuring a classic Maltese cross design with four arms, each terminating in a pointed finial. The arms of the cross are filled with smooth, opaque white enamel, meticulously bordered by thin golden lines that enhance their definition. At the center of the cross is a prominent circular medallion, showcasing a deep, rich dark blue enamel background. Within this blue field, the intertwined golden monograms 'M' and 'J' (representing Maximilian I Joseph) are elegantly displayed, encircled by a delicate twisted gold rope or laurel wreath design.
