Pink Depression Glass Miss America Diamond Pattern Fruit Bowl

This is a vintage serving bowl crafted from translucent pink pressed glass, featuring the distinctive 'Miss America' pattern. The piece is characterized by an overall diamond-point hobnail texture on the exterior, which creates a multifaceted surface that catches and refracts light. The upper rim is finished with a rhythmic, saw-tooth or pointed edge that follows the diamond motif. The interior base of the bowl showcases a radial sunburst or starburst pattern consisting of linear rays extending from the center. This pattern was famously produced by the Hocking Glass Company between 1935 and 1938, during the height of the Depression Era. The color is a classic soft rose or salmon pink, achieved through the addition of selenium or gold salts during the manufacturing process. Physically, the bowl appears to be in very good vintage condition with no major chips or cracks visible along the delicate serrated rim, though minor 'flea bites' are common in glass of this age. The glass exhibits good clarity and typical mold marks representative of mid-century mass-production techniques. Its geometric precision and delicate color are hallmarks of Art Deco influence on American functional tableware from the 1930s.

Based on my visual examination of this fruit bowl, it appears to be an authentic piece of 'Miss America' pattern glassware manufactured by the Hocking Glass Company (circa 1935–1938). The soft pink hue and the specific geometric alignment of the diamond-point hobnails are consistent with original production runs. The saw-tooth rim appears remarkably well-preserved in the images; because these points are highly susceptible to chipping, their integrity significantly stabilizes the item's market value. The market for Depression glass has transitioned from the high-demand 'collector boom' of the 1990s to a more stable, niche market today. While Miss America remains one of the most popular patterns due to its Art Deco appeal, it was mass-produced, making this a 'common' rather than 'rare' piece. Recent auction results and dealer listings for the large fruit bowl in pink consistently fall within the $45 to $65 range. Large serving pieces generally command a premium over standard place settings. It is critical to note that high-quality reproductions of Miss America were produced in later decades. While the color and mold clarity here suggest an original 1930s pressing, a definitive authentication requires a physical inspection. In person, I would examine the base for specific 'shelf wear' marks consistent with age, check for the presence of 'straw marks' (mold cooling lines), and potentially use a UV light test to observe the glass's fluorescence. Furthermore, feeling for the sharpness of the diamond points can help distinguish original Hocking molds from later, blunter reproductions. This appraisal assumes the absence of internal fractures or 'sickness' (cloudiness) not visible in the provided image.
