1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent

This is a United States Lincoln Wheat Cent, minted in 1944. The coin is composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, which was the standard composition returned to in 1944 following the 1943 steel cent production. It measures approximately 19mm in diameter with a plain edge. On the obverse, it features the bust of Abraham Lincoln designed by Victor David Brenner. The date '1944' is visible in the lower right field, though it appears heavily worn. The visible condition shows significant circulation wear and environmental damage; the coin displays a dark, dull brown patina with localized areas of corrosion or 'zinc rot' appearing as white/grey spots along the upper rim. The high points of Lincoln's hair and clothing are flattened, and the inscriptions 'IN GOD WE TRUST' and 'LIBERTY' are extremely faint due to abrasive wear. There is no visible mint mark below the date, indicating it was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Given the heavy surface pitting, lack of luster, and rim dings, the coin would likely be graded as 'About Good' or 'Good' in numismatic terms. Despite its age of 80 years, this is a very common date with high mintage, and its current condition severely limits its numismatic value beyond its raw copper content or historical interest.
