The piece is constructed from a heavy hardwood, finished in a deep ebonized or black lacquer polish. The most striking element is the expansive crest rail and backrest, which is pierced and carved to depict an undulating dragon amidst stylized clouds and scrollwork. This dragon motif continues down the curved armrests, terminating in three-dimensional dragon head finials. The seat is solid wood with a smooth, polished surface that reflects light. The apron below the seat is also heavily decorated with floral and foliate carvings. The piece is supported by four cabriole-style legs with carved knees and scrolled feet. While common in the late 19th to mid-20th century, the luster on this specific piece suggests a later 20th-century production or a very well-maintained older piece.
