Vintage Steel Globe Highway Smudge Pots

This is a pair of vintage industrial highway smudge pots, specifically designed as spherical torches for road or railway warning signals. They are constructed from two heavy-duty steel hemispheres joined by a protruding horizontal center seam. Each unit features a flat base for stability and a top burner assembly where a wick would be inserted. The pots are finished in a weathered blue paint, now showing significant oxidation, surface rust, and patina consistent with mid-20th-century outdoor utility equipment. Notable features include a circular embossed ring on the side, likely for branding or structural reinforcement, and a small metal loop handle at the top for transport. The burner assemblies show heavy soot accumulation and rust. These items appear to be in original, un-restored condition with a lot of character and history reflected in their distressed finish. Such pots were standard safety equipment before battery-powered flashers and LED lights became the industry standard, typically dating from the 1930s through the 1960s.
