Carved Camphor Wood Chest

This is a vintage Chinese camphor wood chest, characterized by elaborate deep-relief carvings on all visible exterior surfaces. The chest is constructed from solid camphor wood, valued for its aromatic scent and natural insect-repellent properties. The primary panels on the lid and front depict traditional landscape scenes, including architectural elements like pagodas, riverboats, and figures in traditional dress, common in mid-20th-century export furniture. The framing borders feature stylized floral and cloud motifs. The wood is finished in a warm reddish-brown stain with a high-sheen varnish. A notable feature is the large, circular brass lock plate and latch (paitong) positioned centrally on the front. The chest is supported by four short, carved bracket feet. The construction utilizes dovetail joints, indicating traditional assembly methods. Condition-wise, the piece shows minor surface wear, dust accumulation in the deep carvings, and some scuffing around the feet consistent with age and use. The high relief of the carving is a hallmark of the 1940s-1970s Hong Kong or Shanghai export era. The craftsmanship is highly decorative, with deep undercuts in the wood that create significant dimensional depth.
