Antique Adjustable Wooden and Cast Iron Horse Hames

This is a pair of antique horse hames, an essential component of a draft horse harness system. The hames consist of two curved vertical pieces made of a dark, weathered wood—likely hickory or ash for strength—reinforced with heavy cast iron or forged steel hardware. Each piece features a series of adjustment notches at the top and perforated metal plates towards the bottom to allow for precise fitting against a horse collar. The metal components show a significant dark brown oxidation and crusty patina, indicating age and substantial use. Notable are the round metal rings (trace connectors) attached to the lower section, used for securing the traces that allowed the animal to pull a load. The wood exhibits significant distressing, including splintering, surface wear, and a darkened, aged finish consistent with a late 19th to early 20th-century manufacture.
