2002 Mississippi State Quarter

This is a 2002 United States Quarter Dollar from the 50 State Quarters program, specifically representing the state of Mississippi. The coin features a diameter of 24.26 mm and is composed of a cupro-nickel clad over a pure copper core, resulting in its distinct silvery metallic color. The reverse side (shown) showcases the 'Magnolia State' theme with two large, detailed magnolia blossoms and leaves. Above the flowers, 'MISSISSIPPI' and the statehood year '1817' are inscribed, while the slogan 'The Magnolia State' is written in a stylized cursive font to the right. The mintage year '2002' and the national motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' are located at the bottom rim. This specific specimen shows moderate-to-heavy circulation wear. Notable condition issues include numerous surface scratches (bag marks) and small nicks across the field and the high points of the floral design. There are visible dings along the outer rim, particularly between the 3 o'clock and 5 o'clock positions. The coin lacks the luster of an uncirculated strike, exhibiting a duller, matte patina typical of money found in daily commerce. The initials 'DW' for Donna Weaver, the designer/engraver, are visible near the bottom right of the magnolia illustration.
