The item features a rectangular, slightly curved form with rounded ends, typical of traditional qalamdans. Its primary material appears to be wood, adorned with meticulously executed marquetry (khatam-kari) across its exterior surfaces. The marquetry displays a geometric pattern composed of tiny tessellated pieces, rendered in contrasting light and dark materials, likely ivory or bone, brass, and different woods, forming a star-like motif. The color palette of the marquetry is predominantly gold, brown, and off-white. The central panel on the lid is the focal point, featuring a vibrant miniature painting depicting a hunting scene. This scene includes several figures on horseback, some with bows and arrows, pursuing various animals like deer and possibly wild boar. The painting employs a rich color scheme with shades of blue, red, green, and earthy tones, outlined in fine black lines, typical of Persian miniature art. The background of the hunting scene transitions from a light blue to a cream color, with detailed foliage and landscape elements.
