U.S. Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (WWII)

This is an original World War II era embroidered shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) for the United States Ninth Air Force. The patch features a shield-shaped ultramarine blue wool felt background. The central design consists of a golden yellow circular disk containing a red embroidered number '9'. Above this are two white upswept stylized wings flanking a white five-pointed star with a red circular center, which represents the classic Army Air Forces Hap Arnold emblem. The construction utilizes high-quality machine embroidery with tight zig-zag stitching common for the 1940s period. It measures approximately 2.5 to 3 inches in height. The top edge appears to have a slight irregularity, possibly indicating it was roughly removed from a uniform. The colors remain vibrant with minimal fading, showcasing the red and gold tones well. There is no visible evidence of significant moth damage, though light pilling is present on the blue felt surface. The lack of a 'glow' under UV light (if tested) would confirm the use of natural fibers consistent with authentic WWII manufacturing. The reverse likely features the standard white 'snow' or bobbin thread typical of period production.
