Antique Octagonal Block Meerschaum Pipe with Silver-Plated Windcap

This is an antique smoking pipe, likely dating from the mid-to-late 19th century. The pipe features an elongated, octagonal paneled bowl and shank, characteristic of European styling from the Victorian era. The primary material is block meerschaum, which has developed a significant, deep golden-amber patina from years of use, an effect highly prized by collectors. It is equipped with a hinged, perforated silver-toned metal windcap (likely silver-plated or nickel-silver) featuring a scalloped edge and a decorative thumb-lift. The stem consists of a dark, multi-faceted vulcanite or buffalo horn section leading to a translucent amber-colored mouthpiece. Regarding condition, the pipe shows severe structural damage; there is a major fracture and loss of material at the transition point where the shank meets the bowl, which appears to have been crudely stabilized with an amber-colored adhesive or resin. The surface of the meerschaum shows considerable pitting, scratching, and general wear consistent with age. There are no visible maker's marks or silver hallmarks in the current view. While the patina is excellent, the significant break at the elbow severely impacts its functional utility and its value as a museum-grade collectible.
