Vintage Damascene Filigree Drop Earrings with Bird Motif

This pair of vintage drop earrings features a classic Damascene design, likely originating from Spain or Japan during the mid-20th century (circa 1950s-1970s). Each earring is composed of a distinctive central oval cabochon made of dark, oxidized steel or iron, meticulously inlaid with 18k or 24k gold and silver foils to depict a stylized bird amongst floral accents. This central motif is bezel-set and surrounded by an ornate, tiered yellow-gold-toned metal frame that exhibits intricate rope-twist and openwork filigree detailing. The oval center measures approximately 15mm by 10mm, while the entire circular drop feature is roughly 30mm in diameter. Regarding condition, the pair is currently in a compromised state; the left earring is missing its ear wire/hook attachment entirely, while the right earring retains a simple shepherd's hook that shows significant tarnish and may be a later replacement. There is visible surface wear to the gold plating on the outer frames, particularly along the raised edges, and light oxidation on the damascene panels. The craftsmanship is evocative of traditional 'Damasquino de Toledo,' though the lack of visible hallmarks suggests mass-market production of the era. Despite the damage, the central inlay remains stable and visually striking.
