Southwestern-style coiled miniature basket with wool highlights

This item appears to be a small, hand-woven bowl consistent with Southwestern indigenous coiled basketry traditions. The object features a circular, slightly concave form with a natural cream-colored rim and base. It is decorated with an geometric stepped pattern in dark brown or black, accompanied by an orange-ochre interior ring. The construction utilizes a coiled foundation, possibly grass or yucca, tightly wrapped with fibers. Resting inside the basket are three small orbs of spun wool in off-white, reddish-pink, and dark brown, which may be decorative or representative of weaving materials. The item measures approximately 3 to 4 inches in diameter based on its proximity to the electronic devices in the frame. Stylistically, the decorative motifs are consistent with Hopi or Navajo (Diné) basketry patterns, though no maker's marks or signatures are visible to confirm origin. Physical condition appears generally good, though there is visible surface lint and some stray fibers consistent with age and use. Because there are no identifying labels, a definitive attribution to a specific tribe or artist cannot be made from the image alone.

Based on my visual analysis of the provided image, this object appears to be a small coiled miniature basket consistent with Southwestern indigenous weaving traditions, possibly Hopi or Diné (Navajo) in style. The stepped geometric motif and the presence of hand-spun wool accents suggest a piece intended for the gift or collector market. However, I cannot verify from a photo whether the materials are natural vegetal dyes or synthetic, nor can I determine the exact fiber composition. While the construction bears characteristics consistent with high-quality hand-weaving, the lack of a visible maker's mark or signature means this attribution remains a hypothesis. I have valued the item based on the assumption it is a handcrafted piece of contemporary indigenous origin. Should the item be identified as a mass-produced reproduction or an 'in the style of' import, the value would likely decrease to $10–$20. Conversely, if documentation or an in-person inspection by a specialist in Native American textiles were to associate this with a known master weaver, the value could exceed the current estimate. Current market demand for miniature Southwestern basketry remains stable among collectors, though value is heavily dictated by the tightness of the weave and the symmetry of the design. A physical inspection would be required to assess the structural integrity of the coils and to confirm the absence of dry rot or fading. To move beyond this working assumption of origin, one would need provenance documentation or a hands-on technical analysis of the weaving start and finish techniques.
