Lucite and Gold-Toned Shark Figurine on Burl Wood Base

This decorative figurine features a stylized shark mid-leap, composed of a clear lucite or acrylic resin body accented with polished gold-toned metal fins, tail, and dorsal spikes. The shark is mounted via a concealed post onto a natural burl wood or manzanita root base, which exhibits a deep reddish-brown finish and complex organic texture. In terms of physical characteristics, the piece stands approximately 6 to 8 inches high; the clear body reveals a smooth, high-gloss finish typical of mid-to-late 20th-century decorative plastics. The gold-toned elements appear to be plated base metal, showing a bright, reflective luster with no immediate signs of significant pitting. The construction relies on the contrast between the industrial transparency of the lucite and the rugged, naturalistic form of the wood. Condition-wise, the item appears well-maintained with light surface dust. The lucite remains clear without yellowing, though close inspection might reveal minor surface scratches. This style is closely associated with designers like Hedi Schoop or the 'Hivo Van Teal' aesthetic, popular in the 1970s and 1980s. The craftsmanship is distinctive for its marriage of marine themes with Hollywood Regency glam influences. No visible signatures or maker's marks are apparent in the provided view, but the specific assembly technique points to a high-quality vintage production.

I have completed a visual examination of the Lucite and gold-toned shark figurine. The piece embodies the 'Hollywood Regency' and 'Coastal Modern' aesthetics popular in the 1970s and 80s. The clear acrylic remains remarkably crisp without the 'yellowing' often seen in vintage plastics, and the polished metal accents maintain a high luster, suggesting a well-preserved environment. The choice of a burl wood base adds organic warmth, a hallmark of mid-tier high-end decorative art from this era. Market demand for marine-themed Lucite remains steady among collectors of 'Van Teal' style pieces, though the absence of a signature (such as Van Teal or Abraham Palatnik) places this in the category of high-quality decorative 'after' works. Comparables for unsigned 20th-century acrylic sculptures on natural bases typically sell within the $150 to $300 range at boutique vintage retailers. Factors limiting the value include the lack of a maker's mark and the relatively small scale. My assessment is based solely on digital images; a physical inspection is required to confirm the absence of internal fractures (crazing) within the Lucite and to determine if the gold elements are solid brass or plated. To fully authenticate the piece as a specific designer work, provenance documentation or original retail labeling would be necessary. Without such evidence, the value is based on the item's aesthetic appeal and material quality as a period-correct decorative object.
