Vintage M. E. Evans Motor Co. Packard Service Pocket Notebook

This is a vintage promotional pocket notebook or appointment book originating from the M. E. Evans Motor Co., a Packard automobile dealership formerly located in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. The item features a teal-green faux leather (leatherette) cover with a heavily grained texture. The front is elegantly gold-stamped with the dealership's name and its status as a provider of 'Sales' and 'Service' for 'Packard' vehicles. The cover is further accented with decorative gold-filigree corner scrolls. It is housed in its original light-colored cardboard slipcase, which features a distinctive 'birch bark' printed pattern. Given the history of the Packard Motor Car Company and the style of the typography, this piece likely dates to the mid-20th century, specifically the 1940s or early 1950s. The condition appears remarkably well-preserved for its age; the gold foil lettering remains bright and legible with minimal rubbing. There is light wear along the edges of the slipcase and some minor surface dirt on the birch-patterned cardstock, but the inner notebook shows little sign of heavy use or structural failure. This object represents a specialized piece of automotive memorabilia from the 'Golden Age' of American motoring.

I have examined the digital representations of the M. E. Evans Motor Co. Packard Service pocket notebook. Based on visual inspection, the item appears to be an authentic piece of mid-century automotive ephemera, likely dating from 1948–1954. The gold-stamping on the grain-textured leatherette remains remarkably crisp, and the presence of the original 'birch bark' pattern slipcase significantly elevates its collectible appeal. Most surviving promotional items from this era show heavy pocket wear or ink saturation; this specimen exhibits 'New Old Stock' (NOS) characteristics, which is a primary driver of its value. The Packard marque maintains a fervent dedicated following, and dealership-specific items from defunct entities like M. E. Evans Motor Co. in Pottstown, PA, carry additional regional interest. Market comparables for standard 1950s automotive notebooks typically range from $40 to $60, but the inclusion of the intact slipcase and the prestige associated with the Packard brand justifies a premium. The current market for 'virgin' ephemera—items never written in—is strong among 'concours' collectors who use these pieces to complete the glovebox toolkits of period-correct restored vehicles. Note that this appraisal is based on photographic evidence. I cannot definitively verify the flexibility of the binding glue or scent of the materials, which can indicate modern reproductions (though unlikely for this specific niche). For full authentication, an in-person inspection would be required to analyze the substrate of the covers and the chemical makeup of the gold foil. Documentation of provenance from the original dealership's estate would further solidify the upper-tier valuation.
