Portrait of Camille Winbush by Courtney Jolliff (from 'Service')
This original mixed-media painting depicts actress Camille Winbush in a vibrant, expressive Neo-expressionist style. Created by Detroit artist Courtney Jolliff for his first solo exhibition, 'Service,' the piece is executed on a non-traditional substrate, seemingly light grey kraft paper or newsprint, which shows visible rippling, organic edge-curling, and minor creasing characteristic of found-material art. The subject is rendered with heavy, gestural brushstrokes in shades of brown, azure blue, and stark white. She is adorned in what appears to be Carnival or gala attire, including a voluminous feathered headpiece and matching blue-and-white costume. A notable graphic element is the small yellow and black crown floating above the head, reminiscent of Basquiat’s iconography. Text is visible in the background, including the bold block letters 'PLASTIC' and 'NO MORE,' suggesting the use of repurposed commercial packaging or posters as the canvas. The work is signed or marked in the upper margin and lower-left corner with dark ink. The raw, unrefined edges and immediate brushwork reflect the artist's personal history—specifically his period of homelessness following a 2022 house fire—giving the piece a significant raw, emotional provenance. The condition is consistent with contemporary folk or street-inspired art, featuring intentional irregularities and a matte finish.
