This is an original World War II era embroidered shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) for the United States Ninth Air Force. The patch features a shield-shaped ultramarine blue wool felt background. The central design consists of a golden yellow circular disk containing a red embroidered number '9'. Above this are two white upswept stylized wings flanking a white five-pointed star with a red circular center, which represents the classic Army Air Forces Hap Arnold emblem. The construction utilizes high-quality machine embroidery with tight zig-zag stitching common for the 1940s period. It measures approximately 2.5 to 3 inches in height. The top edge appears to have a slight irregularity, possibly indicating it was roughly removed from a uniform. The colors remain vibrant with minimal fading, showcasing the red and gold tones well.
