1965 Elizabeth II Churchill Commemorative Crown

This is a United Kingdom commemorative crown minted in 1965 to honor Sir Winston Churchill following his death. The obverse features the young laureate bust of Queen Elizabeth II (first portrait by Mary Gillick), facing right, with the legend 'ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F.D.' and the date '1965' below. The coin is struck in cupro-nickel, measuring approximately 38.6mm in diameter with a weight of 28.28 grams. It features a milled edge and a flat, non-lustrous grey-silver finish typical of this massive mintage. The condition appears to be 'Circulated' or 'Very Fine,' showing significant contact marks, surface scratches, and a dulling of the original finish. There are visible nicks on the rim and fields, particularly concentrated around the Queen's profile and the legends. This was the first British coin to feature a person other than the monarch on the reverse (though the reverse is not pictured here, it features Churchill's portrait). Over 19 million were struck, making this a very common numismatic item from the mid-20th century.
