This item is a 1994 Maui Trade Dollar, a cupronickel souvenir token issued by the Maui Chamber of Commerce. The coin measures approximately 39mm in diameter, consistent with traditional silver dollar dimensions. The obverse shown features the prominent text 'ONE MAUI TRADE DOLLAR' and 'THE VALLEY ISLE' encircling a central graphic of a stylized protea flower and the numeral '1'. Notable inscriptions include 'GOOD FOR ONE DOLLAR IN TRADE AT PARTICIPATING MERCHANTS DURING 1994' and 'VALUATION EXPIRES DEC. 31, 1994'. These tokens were produced annually starting in 1992 to promote local tourism and commerce. The condition appear to be Circulated to About Uncirculated; the metal surfaces show light handling marks, minor surface scratches, and a dulling of the original luster, which is typical for tokens kept as travel mementos.
